RingCentral
Run your RingCentral phone system from Dex - users and extensions, call handling, queues, numbers, desk phones, roles, and E911.
Dex connects to one RingCentral account (RingEX / MVP) through the Platform API so IT can run the phone system conversationally - onboard and offboard users, manage extensions, set call handling and forwarding, move queue members, assign numbers and desk phones, change roles and sites, maintain E911 locations, and pull call-log, directory, and audit-trail reads for troubleshooting. Every write goes through an approval check first. Employees can self-serve on their own line through Dex Go (off by default) - Do Not Disturb, queue log in/out, blocking a spam number, forwarding, caller ID, and voicemail email. Dex signs in as a dedicated, least-privileged JWT admin user, so that user's custom role is the ceiling for everything Dex can do.
What Dex does with RingCentral
Dex handles both admin workflows and employee self-service — all policy-guardrailed and audit-logged.
For admins (Dex Pro)
- Onboard a new user end-to-end - create the extension, assign a number, give them a desk phone or softphone line, and set the E911 location
- Offboard a leaver - pull them from queues, remove admin roles, hand off or free their number and desk phone, and disable the extension
- Manage call handling - answering rules, call forwarding, business hours, caller ID, voicemail email, and caller blocking
- Set presence and Do Not Disturb, and log agents into or out of call queues
- Manage call queues, members, and queue settings; move users between sites
- Assign, reassign, and replace phone numbers; assign desk phones, add BYOD or WebRTC softphone lines, swap broken phones, and remove phone lines
- Change assigned roles (admin-rights changes are flagged) and maintain E911 emergency locations
- Troubleshoot with company and per-user call logs, active calls, directory search, and the admin audit trail
- Reset a user's voicemail PIN (quoted and masked in the approval request)
For employees (self-service)
- Turn Do Not Disturb on or off on your own line
- Log yourself into or out of a call queue you already belong to
- Block or unblock a spam number on your own line
- Forward your calls to your mobile during business or after hours
- Look up your own extension, direct number, and phones; check your missed calls
- Change your outbound caller ID, business hours, or voicemail email (approval required)

Your team types a request in plain language. Dex investigates, plans, and executes — with the right guardrails.

How to configure RingCentral
Onboarding takes minutes. Dex validates your credentials before saving them.
Setup steps
- 1In the RingCentral Developer Console, register a REST API App with the JWT auth flow, set to Private (this account only).
- 2Grant the app only the scopes Dex uses: Read Accounts, Edit Accounts, Edit Extensions, Read Presence, Edit Presence, Read Call Log, Role Management, and Read Audit Trail. Leave Read Messages, Read Contacts, SMS, Fax, RingOut, Call Control, and Read Call Recording off.
- 3Create a JWT credential for a dedicated, least-privileged admin user with a custom role (not Super Admin) - that user's role is the ceiling for everything Dex can do.
- 4Graduate the app to production (sandbox apps only work with environment set to sandbox).
- 5In Dex, enable the RingCentral integration and paste the environment, Client ID, Client Secret, and JWT. Dex validates with a live read before saving.
Credentials required
- environment
- production (default) or sandbox - non-secret
- client_id
- The REST API app's Client ID (Developer Console > Apps > your app > Credentials)
- client_secret
- The same app's Client Secret
- jwt
- A JWT credential for the dedicated RingCentral admin user Dex acts as, restricted to this app
Requirements
- •A RingCentral account (RingEX / MVP) with a private REST API App using the JWT auth flow
- •A dedicated, least-privileged admin user with a custom role - every call runs as that user, so its role bounds what Dex can do
- •GET reads cannot be policy-gated in Dex, so the app scopes and the JWT user's role are the read boundary - leave message, contact, call-control, and recording scopes off
- •This is a per-tenant (non-global) app: one Dex connection holds one JWT credential for one RingCentral account
- •Dex Go self-service is off by default - an admin turns it on per account
